You opened the mail today and got an invite you’ve been waiting on for that wedding of your friend from college. At first you’re excited, then you read that the requested attire is semi-formal. Wait, what?

You realize you have nothing in your closet and panic sets in. This wedding is six weeks away, the kids are out of school, you’re going on vacation, and now you have to shop. Don’t worry, girl. That’s why we’ve created this guide with wedding guest approved dresses and jumpsuits.

First and foremost, here are a few guidelines when you’re thinking about what to wear to this wedding.

  1. Know what kind of wedding you will be attending. There’s a big difference between a barn wedding and “formal attire requested.” Use your Google search bar or head to Instagram to take a look at the venue. This will help you get an overall feel for where the wedding is taking place.
  2. Avoid solid white of any kind including ivory, champagne, and basically anything in the white family. Let the bride stand out on her special day. Whites with bold prints or lace are generally okay as long as white isn’t the dominant color.
  3. Florals and prints are a good go to for summer or fall weddings.
  4. Check the weather a few days before. If it is an outdoor wedding, you want to be prepared for hot, cold, rain, etc.
  5. Nothing too short or revealing. Keep is classy no matter what type of wedding it is.
  6. Make sure you have comfortable (but still dressy) shoes. You will want to dance the night away.

For the Barn Wedding

For a more casual look, this dress is a solid choice. You can keep it dressed down with a flat sandal or even an espadrille wedge. This red floral dress will also let you bust a move on the dance floor because of its flow and comfort.

This jumpsuit is lightweight and easy to style with heels or a wedge depending on what you'll be more comfortable in. Jumpsuits are a great choice if you plan to spend most of the reception on the dance floor.

We love our maxi dresses here at Closet Candy and this one is no exception. It’s perfect for the barn wedding venue because this dress is a lighter style with a ruffle detail giving it a polished look. You can style this with flats or a wedge depending on your height.

For the Garden/Outdoor Venue

This jumpsuit is lightweight and if this wedding is taking place outside, this is going to be an important feature. You can style this with a dressier flat sandal or with a nude heel.

A flirty style that’s still wedding appropriate is a great choice for an outdoor wedding. This romper is comfortable, but still dressy enough for this special event. Also, if the wedding is taking place outside, this romper will help keep you cool.

Hello, garden wedding! This dress would be perfect for a beautiful floral-filled outdoor wedding. From the lace details to the mesh floral design, it's an easy choice that you could rock with nude heels or a wedge.

For the Semi Formal Church Wedding

This dress is the exception to the “avoid white” rule. Since it has a bold, colorful lace pattern, this dress is wedding guest appropriate and perfect for the semi-formal invite you’ve received. It’s breathable and so easy to dress up with a nude heel and clutch.

Some people have mixed feelings about wearing black to a wedding, but the rules of fashion are meant to bend so we say, rock what you feel confident wearing. Plus, this jumpsuit is too good to miss and totally rewearable after the wedding. You can add a pop of color with a bold beaded earring or even incorporate leopard with a heel or clutch.

Bold and timeless are the perfect way to describe this knot front dress. Again, it’s a comfortable, lightweight material that’s dressy enough for that semi-formal wedding. Just add nude heels and a clutch with a sultry nude lip to finish the look.

Hopefully, now you have a good idea of what you might want to wear for the weddings where you will spend your weekend dancing with great friends and celebrating this big day.
